Moringa Leaves: Getting to Know This Remarkable Plant

Moringa (Moringa oleifera) is a remarkable plant that has been valued for generations. Native to parts of South Asia and now grown throughout many tropical and subtropical regions, including Jamaica, it is often called the “drumstick tree.”

    What makes moringa leaves special?

Moringa leaves are naturally nutrient-rich and provide vitamins, minerals, plant protein, fiber, and naturally occurring antioxidants. They also contain minerals such as calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium, along with vitamins including vitamin A and vitamin C.

The nutritional content can vary depending on factors such as how the leaves are grown, harvested, and prepared.

    How are moringa leaves used?

Moringa leaves are quite versatile. Fresh leaves can be cooked or steamed and added to meals, while young leaves can also be enjoyed in salads and other dishes.

The leaves can be dried and prepared as a tea, or ground into a powder that can be incorporated into foods and drinks.

Different parts of the moringa plant - including its leaves, flowers, seeds, and roots - have also been used traditionally in different cultures.
